ประเพณีสงกรานต์ [Song Karn Festival]

“วันสงกรานต์” หรือประเพณีสงกรานต์ (ภาษาอังกฤษ: Songkran, Water Festival หรือ Thai New Year) ตรงกับวันที่ 13-15 เมษายนของทุกปี วันสงกรานต์ คือ การฉลองวันขึ้นปีใหม่ของไทย ซึ่งเป็นประเพณีและมรดกทางวัฒนธรรมอันล้ำค่าของชาติ ที่สืบทอดมาตั้งแต่สมัยโบราณ โดยปัจจุบันยังถือเป็นวันหยุดราชการอีกด้วย รวมทั้งยังมีการจัดกิจกรรมวันสงกรานต์ทั่วประเทศ แก่นสำคัญของวันสงกรานต์นั้นเน้นไปที่ความกตัญญู ความอบอุ่น ความสนุกสนาน และการเคารพให้เกียรติซึ่งกันและกัน รวมทั้งความสามัคคี ระหว่างบุคคลในครอบครัว เพื่อนฝูง ชุมชน และสังคม โดยมี “น้ำ” เป็นสื่อสำคัญในการเชื่อมสัมพันธไมตรี

“Songkran Day” or the Songkran Festival (in English: Songkran, Water Festival, or Thai New Year) falls on April 13-15 every year. Songkran Day is the celebration of the Thai New Year, a precious cultural heritage of the nation that has been passed down since ancient times. It is also a public holiday today, with Songkran activities held nationwide. The core essence of Songkran focuses on gratitude, warmth, fun, and mutual respect, as well as unity among family members, friends, communities, and society, with “water” being a key medium for fostering relationships.

วันสงกรานต์มีความสำคัญต่อสถาบันครอบครัว เนื่องจากเป็นช่วงเวลาที่ผู้คนนิยมเดินทางกลับภูมิลำเนาเพื่อพบปะกับสมาชิกในครอบครัว ถือเป็นโอกาสดีในการสานสัมพันธ์และใช้เวลาร่วมกันระหว่างบุคคลในครอบครัว

Songkran Day is significant for families as it is a time when people often travel back to their hometowns to reunite with family members. It is a great opportunity to strengthen relationships and spend time together.

กิจกรรมวันสงกรานต์ ยังมีความสำคัญต่อชุมชนและสังคมโดยรวม เพราะเป็นโอกาสดีให้ผู้คนได้พบปะในงานรื่นเริง ทำบุญทำทาน บำเพ็ญสาธารณประโยชน์ รวมถึงช่วยกันสืบสานและอนุรักษ์วัฒนธรรมอันดีงามของไทย

Songkran activities are also important for the community and society as a whole, providing a good opportunity for people to meet in festive events, make merit, engage in charitable activities, and help preserve and promote the beautiful Thai culture.

นอกจากนี้ ผู้คนยังนิยมทำบุญ ตักบาตร และเข้าวัดในช่วงเทศกาลสงกรานต์ ดังนั้นวันสงกรานต์จึงมีความสำคัญต่อพระพุทธศาสนาอีกด้วย

Additionally, people often make merit, offer alms, and visit temples during the Songkran festival, making it significant for Buddhism as well.

ประเพณีลอยกระทง [Lyo Krathong culture]

ลอยกระทงเป็นประเพณีที่ได้รับความนิยมและเป็นที่รู้จักของไทย โดยมีการฉลองกันในช่วงวันเพ็ญเดือนสิบสอง ซึ่งมักจะอยู่ในช่วงเดือนพฤศจิกายน คำว่า loy” หมายถึง ลอย ส่วนคำว่า “kratong” หมายถึง กระทงหรือภาชนะที่ทำขึ้นสำหรับลอยนํ้าในประเพณีลอยกระทง

Loy Krathong is a popular Thai festival, celebrated every year during the full moon period in the 12th lunar month, which usually falls in November. The word “loy” means to float, and the word “krathong” refers to a basket.

กระทง คือ ภาชนะสวยงามที่ทำจากต้นกล้วย ตกแต่งด้วยใบตอง ดอกไม้ ธูป และเทียน ชาวไทยหลายคนนิยมลอยกระทงในแม่น้ำ ลำคลอง หรือแหล่งน้ำอื่น ๆ ในช่วงกลางคืน เพื่อขอขมาและแสดงความเคารพต่อพระแม่คงคา ผู้เป็นเทวีแห่งแม่น้ำ

A krathong is a beautiful small basket made from a piece of a banana tree trunk and decorated with banana leaves, flowers, incense sticks and a candle. Many Thais float their krathongs down rivers, ponds, lakes, canals, or other waterways at night to pay their respects to the water goddess, Phra Mae Khongkha.

การลอยกระทงไปตามแม่น้ำนั้นยังถือเป็นสัญลักษณ์แทนการลอยความโกรธ ความทุกข์ ความเศร้า และโชคไม่ดีของปีที่ผ่านมาให้ลอยไปกับแม่น้ำอีกด้วย

The act of floating a krathong symbolises letting go of one’s anger, sadness and bad luck from the previous year.
